Aircraft Climatology
Aircraft Climatology for Chemistry-Climate Model Evaluation
Averaged profiles from listed aircraft campaigns have been compiled for the evaluation of various chemical species in chemistry-climate models. For each aircraft campaign, regions with high frequency occurrence of vertical profiles from the aircraft are identified. Mean and median profiles of available species are compiled over these regions, as well as percentiles of the distribution with a 1km vertical resolution. Profiles that are outliers of the distribution were removed. Following the approach by Emmons et al. (2000), we extended the existing climatology to the year 2010 (Emmons et al., Data composites of airborne observations of tropospheric ozone and its precursors, J. Geophys. Res., 105, 20,497-20,538, 2010; Tilmes et al., 2014, in preparation.)
New aircraft campaigns have been added to the composites in ncdf format (*_nc.tar.gz). Original data for most of the campaigns are available from sites linked to the Chemistry-Climate Model Initiative (CCMI) aircraft data working group site.
Ascii format regional profiles for CITE through TRACE-P are available in this single tar file.
Naming Conventions and File Formats
Species file labels
Some abbreviations for species labels have been used in the composite file names (also used in the Profile plots above). File headers give full variable names:
- pannox: PAN/NOx
- hno3nox: HNO3/NOx
- h2o2ch3ooh: H2O2/CH3OOH
- c3h8c2h6: C3H8/C2H6
- nono2: NO/NO2
- noday: NO when SZA<90deg
- rhi (rhw): Relative Humidity with respect to ice (water)
File Formats: New campaigns are only available in NCDF format
