Accelerating environmental sustainability solutions in Africa: a UCAR initiative

What we do

We are building a UCAR-wide initiative to coordinate UCAR’s research and activities to accelerate environmental sustainability solutions for Africa. This effort is conducted by UCAR scientists in collaboration with U.S. university partners, African-based researchers and the international community.

Motivation

As one of the continents undergoing the fastest population growth and growing economy, Africa is experiencing various environmental and sustainability challenges. These challenges are causing large economic losses and premature human mortality leading to uneven development and poverty for a significant number of people across Africa. Following the mission of NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research, USA) and UCAR (University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, USA, the manager of NCAR and other programs) to foster the transfer of knowledge and technology for the betterment of life on Earth, there is an opportunity for UCAR to provide support to develop environmental solutions through sustainable partnerships in Africa. Indeed, UCAR expertise and tools can contribute to addressing many of the urgent environmental sustainability issues.
