Mauro will be learning to run the WRF-Chem model with an emphasis on predicting the speciation of aerosol particles.  The situation in the Mediterranean (centered on Italy) is particularly interesting due to strong local biogenic and anthropogenic emissions, and occasional long range transport of dust from N. Africa and the Sahara.  These very different aerosols are likely to have very different health impacts, due to their different chemical composition.  This will help overcome one of the limitation of air pollution health studies, which currently assume that only the mass and size of the particles is important – an obviously crude approximation.
