ACOM’s Ralph Cicerone Fellowship and Cicerone Visitors

Main content

In 2020, the Ralph Cicerone Fellowship was awarded to Behrooz Roozitalab, a graduate student at the University of Iowa with Prof. Greg Carmichael. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and ACOM’s inability to host most visitors in 2020 and limitations on in-person meetings in 2021, Behrooz opted to postpone his Fellowship and visits to Boulder, but participated in a number of virtual ACOM meetings, including MUSICA tutorials and Research Reports. In late 2021, Behrooz’s Fellowship was converted into an official virtual Ralph Cicerone Fellowship visit from September through December 2021, during which time Behrooz met regularly with his mentoring team led by ACOM Project Scientist Simone Tilmes. Behrooz presented his research investigating air quality in India using the multi-scale MUSICA-v0 model at the ACOM virtual Research Reports on December 8, and at the 2021 Fall AGU Meeting in New Orleans.

The 2021 Ralph Cicerone Fellowship was awarded to Genevieve (Genie) Lorenzo, a graduate student at the University of Arizona with Prof. Armin Sorooshian. Similar to Behrooz, Genie has postponed her Fellowship and visit to NCAR until the spring/summer of 2022, when she will work on a research project with her ACOM mentor, Sr. Scientist Mary Barth. In the meantime, Genie has been meeting periodically with Mary to discuss research goals and activities. In addition to awarding the Fellowship to one graduate student each year, in 2021 the Ralph Cicerone program was expanded to include Cicerone Visits, one-month visits for one or two additional graduate students to visit NCAR in Boulder and collaborate with ACOM scientists on their research and participate in some of the many professional development programs for summer interns at NCAR|UCAR. The 2021 Cicerone Visits were awarded to Halima Salah (Wayne State University) and Jerrold Adcan (University of Wisconsin-Madison), who are planning to visit ACOM during spring/summer 2022.
