Abstract Troposheric ozone is a harmful greenhouse gas for human and ecosystem health, so accurately depicting its concentration using models is an important step in understanding global ozone patterns and trends. In this project, we question if an updated record of the Ozone Monitoring Instrument/Microwave Limb Sounder (OMI/MLS) from 2005 to 2024 can highlight any biases regarding tropospheric ozone concentration found in the Community Atmosphere Model with chemistry (CAM-chem), a component of the Community Earth System Model version 2.2 (CESM2.2). We create a long-term tropospheric ozone average from OMI/MLS, harmonize the model output and measurements, and compare the concentrations appearing in model output with the observational record through global difference plots, zonal latitudinal distributions, and temporal trends. In general, we find an overestimation of ozone throughout the Northern Hemisphere, with underestimation in the Southern Hemisphere. In global tropospheric columns of ozone up to 300hPa and 100hPa, model output is typically within 24.6% and 17.6%, respectively, of observations. This study is another important complementary step that can help examine CESM simulation accuracy in the future.
