| Abstract | Rich Stolarski had a healthy appreciation for understanding stratospheric behavior based on both observations and model simulations, and he wrote many papers including both aspects. This work will give an update on observations of stratospheric temperatures covering almost 5 decades, highlighting impacts of greenhouse gases and ozone depleting substances, along with solar cycle and volcanic effects. Rich wrote influential papers on all of these topics. Long-term observations are in general agreement with model results, but there are always surprises in observed variability. |
