Abstract Extreme stratospheric water vapor enhancements from the Hunga volcanic eruption in January 2022 resulted in anomalous cooling of the stratosphere and mesosphere during the following years. Global model simulations of Hunga impacts show good agreement with observed temperature changes over time, and demonstrate that the cooling results from combined radiative effects of water vapor increases and related ozone changes. Approximately half of the Hunga water vapor remains in the upper atmosphere in 2025. We will present updated analyses of satellite temperature measurements showing the observed evolution of middle atmosphere cooling from Hunga through 2025.
