ASIA-AQ Modeling

Main content

ACOM & RAL, along with several other forecasting teams, supported flight planning during the NASA ASIA-AQ field experiment which took place in the Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand during February-March 2024.  These modeling teams are now evaluating their models with the observations and supporting the international science team to interpret the measurements and identify strategies for improving air quality in urban areas across Asia.

WRF Tracer Forecasts for ASIA-AQ

A 5-km resolution domain was used for WRF, with tracers based on CO emissions for numerous regions and from fires, and NO emissions for anthropogenic point sources and ship emissions.  Airmass age was also calculated for fires and anthropogenic emissions.

MUSICAv0 Forecasts & Analyses

MUSICAv0 forecasts used the CAM component of CESM, simulating aerosols with specified oxidants, with also a number of tagged CO tracers.  A regionally refined grid with 14-km resolution over Asia was used.  For post-campaign analysis, MUSICAv0 is being re-run with full chemistry.
