PAN-CIMS
PAN-CIMS (NCAR Community In Situ Measurements Group)
The PAN-CIMS instrument was requested for the FRAPPE field mission, but the instrument required extensive updating of wiring, mechanical hardware, and electrical components. The existing instrument did not have structural certification or electrical wiring that was acceptable for flight on the NCAR C-130 or HIAPER Gulfstream GV, and Steve Shertz worked with Frank Flocke to understand the required modifications, developed an electrical schematic of the complete instrument, and implemented the required electrical and component changes. We designed certified structural mounting hardware for all of the existing components, created an integral mounting frame that supports the instrument when it is removed from the HIAPER rack, and submitted all required electrical and mechanical documentation for the new instrument. The PAN-CIMS instrument was installed on the NCAR C-130 and flown during the FRAPPE field mission in 2014, and our group provided instrument operation and field support for this instrument during the flights.
